"Half my life ago, I killed a girl." This true story begins with Darin in high school, and the car accident that changed his life forever.  He feels so much guilt, even though he is cleared of being at fault as the driver. Celine's mother tells him that he must live for two now, which puts an even heavier burden on him. "My accident was the deepest part of my life and the second deepest was hiding it...By now the camouflage had become my skin." Darin has a terrible time in his young adult years getting close to anyone.

I felt as if he was in the same room telling me his story; I read it in one sitting.

Alice fell down a Rabbit Hole and landed in another world, far Beneath the Surface of the reality we all know. Published in 1865 by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson AKA Lewis Carroll, it has enjoyed numerous renditions, from the Disney version in 1951 to the Tim Burton 2010 variation.  Here are some recent books which play with the Wonderland story to create a whole new adventure!

Splintered: a novel by A.G. Howard - Alyssa Gardner hears the thoughts of plants and animals. She hides her  delusions for now, but she knows her fate: she will end up like her mother, in an institution. Madness has run in her family ever since her great-great-great grandmother Alice Lidel told Lewis Carroll her strange dreams inspiring his classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. But perhaps she's not mad. And perhaps Carroll's stories aren't as whimsical as they first seem.

Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter - When her entire existence is shattered in the blink of an eye, Ali is forced to partner with secretive bad boy Cole Holland to avenge the deaths of her loved ones by returning an undead army to their graves.

The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor - When she is cast out of Wonderland by her evil aunt Redd, young Alyss Heart finds herself living in Victorian Oxford as Alice Liddell and struggles to keep memories of her kingdom intact until she can return and claim her rightful throne.  Follow-up books in this series are: Seeing Redd and Archenemy.

The outside world is full of dangerous hybrids: two souls in one body. Everyone starts out this way, but it can become very unstable as the two souls age and begin to disagree. Luckily, the citizens of America have worked hard to keep the population pure. In America, one soul eventually becomes dominant until the other fades away completely. And if a hybrid never settles? The government takes care of those unfortunate cases.

Eva and Addie are two souls living in one body well beyond the standard age of settling. Addie is the dominant soul, the one that controls the body and does the talking, but Eva is always there in the backgroud. They pretend they are settled because it's far too risky to let on that Eva is still there. But when someone from school offers Eva a chance to grow stronger and eventually speak and move for herself, Addie and Eva have to make a very difficult and potentially deadly decision.

What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang is a great story of an alternate universe that feels like it could be real.

Like Piddy's life isn't hard enough, what with her best friend moving away and Piddy having to go to a new school, now some girl she's never even met, Yaqui Delgado, wants to kick Piddy's ass. This book is a really realistic look at how one bully changes another teen's whole life. It made me remember my own bully from middle school, who, for some reason, thought she could make me finish her woodshop project for her. She got her just desserts when she threw it at me and it broke into pieces. I don't think she got an A in that class...

The Tragedy Paper by Elizabeth LaBan is a compelling story of forbidden love, secrets and the lengths people will go to keep both. The Irving School is a prestigious boarding school; their motto is "enter here to be and find a friend." Every year the departing seniors leave a gift in their room - food, clothing, maybe booze - for the senior who inherits their room the next year. Duncan finds a surprising and intriguing gift: a stack of CD's that not only gives him the material he needs to write his tragedy paper (the grueling senior English thesis), but tells the story of Tim MacBeth. Tim transferred to the Irving School the last semester of the previous year. He was 17, an albino and shy. The last thing Tim expected was to find a friend let alone fall in love and perhaps, have that love returned.
If you liked 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher, Looking for Alaska or The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, then this is a must read book!

In a future Earth, giant human like creatures have invaded.  Humans retreat behind walls to live protected from these giants.  One day, the intelligent, 165 foot tall "Colossus Titan" appeared and breached these walls.  Mikasa and her friends must find a way to defend the remains of the human race.  This is my favorite Manga series of recent publication.

The third book in The Misadventures of Tallulah Casey comes out in a week! I am sooo excited!!! The first two books made me literally LOL.

Tallulah Casey is a British teen who signs up for a performing arts camp, with visions of a summer spent being a star and kissing boys. Imagine her surprise when she finds that 1. there's no room for her in the dorms so she has to stay with a batty family who gives her squirrel slippers, 2. there are NO BOYS in her camp, and 3. the boys down the hill seem to be attending some sort of military school. Whilst coping with all of that, Tallulah is also coming to terms with her knobby knees and the fact that the boys caught her kissing a tree.

In book two, Tallulah lands a major role in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, which would be an honor except she's playing Bottom, the fool who spends most of the play with a donkey's head.

In the latest installment, she's doing her best to resist falling for the bad boy, while trying to land the lead in a new play.

Why be the sheep when you can be the wolf?

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from a brutal arranged marriage to the convent of St. Mortain, where the nuns still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. Ismae’s latest assignment takes her straight into the high court of 15th century Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of conspiracy and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

This book had everything: a strong heroine, a dashing hero, suspense, romance and intrigue. Ismae is a really engaging character who faces some tough choices. Will she follow her heart or her orders? If you like this one, check out the second in the series Dark Triumph.
