Hide-n-seek Meets X Marks the Spot

by:
Bethany

Geo what? That's pretty much my reaction when I first heard we were going to be hosting this event. But, now that I’m familiar with the concept, I can’t wait to learn more.

Is geocaching a foreign concept to you too? Allow me to explain. It's outdoor treasure hunting meets hide and seek…for the modern world. You use GPS to find hidden containers filled with a logbook and other small items, make your mark and replace the container for the next treasure hunter to find.

Want to find out more? We'll have geocaching expert Phyllis McGuire at the Golden Library at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, to give a presentation on this fun activity and discuss earth caching…you’ll have to come to find out what that is!

There's Gold in Them Thar Hills!

by:
Bethany

Goooooold! More than 150 years after Colorado's famous gold rush, people are still fascinated with finding gold in the hills outside Denver. And wouldn't you know it, there's still gold to be found. What? How? Where?

If you've had a hankering to start prospecting, but weren't sure how, Gold Prospectors of the Rockies will be at the Golden Library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, to give you the low down. They will present a short history and overview of gold prospecting in Colorado, followed by a demonstration of what equipment is needed to do it yourself, how it works, starting costs and prospecting sites.

Help Us Out with the Golden Remodel Design

by:
Bethany

Missed out on the Open House at the Golden Library regarding our upcoming remodel, but still want to share your thoughts? Not to worry, you still have a chance to give your input on what'd you'd like to see from us...and what you don't want to see. We're looking to the community to tell us about the library services you value, and to help define the look and feel of the remodel design.

You can still take our survey through the City's Golden Vision Community Forum. You'll need to create an account, but it's as easy as 1-2-3. This networking tool will give you the opportunity to weigh in on the Golden Library Remodel, as well as other community projects, and to hear what others are thinking.

Thanks for your input - we're excited to see what the community has to say! We will be hosting a design feedback session from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, June 6 to get your thoughts on design options.

Imagine a Great Library

by:
Bethany

You have the opportunity to tell your local library exactly what you want and need from them. What do you say? Well, if you're a Golden resident or user of the Golden Library, you will have this opportunity.

We're looking for your help to come up with the new layout and design for the Golden Library at an open house from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, May 19 at the Golden Library.

You'll have the chance provide input on the library services you’d like to see, help to define the look and feel of the remodel design, and learn more about the project plans and timeline. This will be accomplished through a number of interactive stations set up to solicit feedback on key project elements. You'll also have the chance to complete an online survey on the proposed remodel.

This is the first step in the remodel process. We hope to share preliminary design plans for the Golden library remodel in June, finalize plans in July, begin construction in August and complete the remodel by the end of the year.

Hope to see you there!

Great Gardening Techniques

by:
Bethany

Ah spring...warm weather, buds on the trees, tulips sprouting...oh no, it's already time to get the gardens ready?!?!

That's usually how my spring goes. If you go from zero to panic like me, you might want to head over to the Golden Library in the next couple of weeks. We've got a CSU-trained Master Gardener who will be conducting two workshops that will help out all those who aspire to have a green thumb.

The first will focus on picking the best plants for transplanting and proper techniques, and the second will be all about creating fabulous container gardens.

There will be time at the end of both sessions for questions too!

Golden Library Getting a Makeover

by:
Bethany

Freshening up your appearance, approach and attitude can make a world of difference in the way you feel and in the way you interact with others. Apply the same type of thinking to an organization and it can improve the way it provides services and meets the needs of its customers. This is exactly what will be happening to the Golden Library this year.

We're excited to announce that we will be working with the City of Golden to do a major remodel of the Golden Library! The library will be updated to reflect a new vision for library service, which we shared with you last year.

Here are some quick highlights of our new model for library service:

  • Enhanced alignment of library materials, programs and services to address the interests and needs of the Golden community;
  • Expert staff, trained to help patrons navigate the increasingly complex world of information and technology;
  • Dynamic programming that creates engaging and impactful patron experiences;
  • Enhanced access to evolving technologies and digital resources;
  • Increased emphasis on community partnerships, outreach and outcomes; and
  • Updates to the Golden Library to enhance the library experience.

The Golden Library will be the first JCPL location to fully reflect this new service model.

Have some ideas you'd like to share? You will have plenty of opportunities to be a part of this process, including:

  • May 19 Open House: There will be an open house to solicit resident feedback on the proposed remodel from 4-7 p.m. at the Golden Library.
  • May 22 City Council meeting: Library executives will present an overview of the new service model. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers.
  • There will also be an opportunity for residents to review and comment on design recommendations in June.

Tax Help at JCPL

by:
Bethany

Benjamin Franklin once said, "...nothing is said to be certain, except libraries helping with your taxes." Ok, so that isn't exactly what he said, but it has a ring of truth to it and tax season is here. But fear not, dear countrymen, the Library will again be offering free tax assistance to our patrons.

Each year,  we partner with AARP to offer free counseling and preparation assistance to all taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Beginning Feb. 1, IRS-certified volunteers will be at several library locations to help with any tax-related issues people may have. Space is limited for this popular series, so patrons are encouraged to arrive early. You'll need to make a reservation if you're planning to go to Evergreen or Golden

We also have several online resources, and limited copies of select State and Federal forms in our libraries.

Good luck and happy filing!

Lately I've been a little bit dog obsessed! I've been ooh-ing and aww-ing over adorable puppies on Animal Planet's Too Cute and putting dog books out for my Staff Picks on the Children's Staff Picks display.

Why am I so into dogs these days? No, I didn't get a new puppy (though we do we have an adorable older dog at home.)

What I've been doing lately is I've been 'interviewing' some dogs (and their handlers from Pet Partners) for a new program at Golden: PAWS for Reading. No suits and ties at these interviews, just tail wags and licks all around!

Starting in January, my new furry friends Minnie and Harvey will be coming to the library two Saturdays a month to read with kids! If you'd like to cuddle up with a dog and read, please register at the Children's Desk one week in advance of the program date. Children registering for this program need to be old enough to read on their own. Here's the schedule for 2014:

PAWS for Reading

11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturdays

Jan. 4 & 11

Feb. 1 & 8

March 1 & 8

April 5 & 12

May 3 & 10

June 7 & 14

If you're looking for some ideas for a great title to share with Harvey or Minnie, or just want a dog-gone great book to read, here are some of my absolute favorites:

Ball by Mary Sullivan

Dog Gone by Leeza Hernandez

Hopefully you'll have time to PAWS for a minute and check out one of these great reads!
