Author Visit - Cynthia Swanson

by:
cindy

Colorado author Cynthia Swanson is coming to Arvada Library to discuss her debut novel, The Bookseller. The Library Journal describes her book as “a stunner of a debut novel, astonishingly tight and fast paced. The 1960s tone is elegant and even, and Kitty's journey is intriguing.”

Set in Denver in the 1960s, the story features Kitty who runs a local bookstore with her best friend when she finds the line between her reality and dreams blurred.

Swanson is a student of the Lighthouse Writer’s Workshop and lives in Washington Park with her husband and three children.

PAWS for Reading Program Expands

by:
Rebecca

Do you have a new or reluctant reader in your family? If so, we have just the program for you! Our very popular PAWS for Reading program -- which started at the Golden Library last year -- is now available at libraries throughout Jefferson County!

We're partnering with the Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program to give young readers the encouragement they need to improve their reading skills. In this program, we invite kids to read to trained therapy dogs. Research has shown that these programs are particularly helpful for reluctant readers. They tend to be much more comfortable reading to dogs because there’s no stress and no judgment. And parents have reported that children participating in the program turn to reading more at home, show a greater willingness to read aloud at school, and are more disposed to venturing into increasingly difficult reading materials.

Registration is required for these programs; to register, call 303-235-5275 or ask staff for details.

Arvada Historian Discusses Book - Legendary Locals of Arvada

by:
cindy

The Arvada Library is proud to host third-generation Arvadan and local historian, Tanya Long, for a discussion and signing of her new book, Legendary Locals of Arvada.

Unique characters have always made up the landscape of Arvada. Pioneers, ranchers and farmers, business leaders, community-minded individuals, doctors, sports figures, and even a Broadway star have all called home the city on a bluff overlooking Clear Creek. Benjamin Wadsworth was not only one of Arvada’s founding fathers but also the town’s first postmaster, and he donated many parcels of land for schools and churches to be built in the burgeoning town. Lloyd King, in 1947, opened the first King Soopers grocery store in Arvada. From this one small market grew an empire of more than 100 King Soopers stores in Colorado. Popular radio personality Irv Brown is known as “Denver’s go-to guy” for sports talk. Brown coached at Arvada High School during the 1960s, leading the Redskins to 10 conference football titles and one state championship. And two-time Cy Young Award–winner Roy Halladay honed his baseball skills in Arvada as a youth. The starting pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies graduated from Arvada West High School in 1995. From Louis Ralston’s discovery of gold in 1850 along the creek that bears his name, to the present day sprawling suburb, Arvada’s people have helped make the town a jewel of the Centennial State.
