Join the Pod

by:
Bethany

With the Fall Whale of a Used Book Sale quickly approaching, we are still looking to grow our pod. There are several fun volunteer opportunities available!

We need close to 200 volunteers the week of Oct. 22-27. Set-up shifts are available on Tuesday-Wednesday, Oct. 22-23, and sale shifts starting Thursday evening, Oct. 24 through Sunday, Oct. 27. We especially need help on Sunday, Oct. 27, from either 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. or 12:30-5 p.m.

It's a lot of fun and a great way to give back to your community. We need greeters, table tidiers, guards, cashiers, counters and more. If you would like to volunteer for the upcoming sale, please call or email Kristine Romero, 303-403-5075.

One Book 1 Golden: Meet Benediction author, Kent Haruf

by:
Carroll, Golden Library Manager

I’ve enjoyed getting to know the Golden community through reading and discussing Benediction for One Book 1 Golden. You shared your impressions at the book discussion, engaged in thoughtful conversation with a panel of faith leaders and created photos that capture the unique qualities of Golden.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the time spent reading about the small town of Holt, Colorado and sharing this experience with your neighbors. The final program is an opportunity to meet and hear from the author, Kent Haruf. Haruf will read from Benediction, answer questions from the audience and conduct a book signing.

Looking to improve your resume building skills and/or interviewing techniques? JCPL is partnering with Jefferson County Workforce to offer several training sessions this month on each topic at our Arvada and Belmar Libraries.

During the Resume Basics sessions, you'll learn about the three basic types of resumes, and how to avoid making the most common resume mistakes that could instantly count you out of the running for any job that you are applying for. Current, updated information and a standard that identifies what employers and businesses are looking for will also be provided.

The Interview Techniques workshop will teach you how to display confidence in selling yourself to a potential employer. You'll also learn about the importance of marketing yourself, interpersonal communication, and professional dress. This course will provide interviewing techniques that will boost your confidence.

One Book. 1 Golden. Turning the Other Cheek

by:
Carroll, Golden Library Manager

This year’s annual One Book 1 Golden features Benediction, a powerful novel by Kent Haruf. Haruf is known for writing books that bring small-town Colorado to life and this book is a fitting selection for the close-knit community of Golden.

One of the more powerful chapters in the book deals with Reverend Lyle’s controversial message based on the Sermon on the Mount. Is violence ever warranted as revenge? Is there such a thing as a “just” war? This sermon ultimately leads to the reverend’s dismissal.

This chapter sparked one of the programs I’m most looking forward to - a panel discussion with leaders from the local faith community on “turning the other cheek” and its relevance in today’s world.

Sept. 24, 6 p.m., Golden Community Center
1470 10th Street

Golden, CO  80401

We hope to see you at the panel discussion and the other One Book 1 Golden events. Happy reading!
