Do You Know the Importance of Reading to a Child?

by:
Bethany

Fact: More than a third of the children in Jefferson County live in poverty. Many of these children don’t have books and are not read to at home.

According to Mary Kuehner, JCPL's Traveling Children's Librarian, research shows that being read to as a child and having books in the home are the two most important indicators of future academic success. This information is not lost on us. JCPL makes sure our poorest and youngest residents experience both. We visit local Head Start and other preschool classes to deliver bilingual early-literacy storytimes to at-risk children, and we make sure every child gets a book of their own to take home. Teachers across the county have said that they can see evidence of the children’s increased early literacy skills as a direct result of this program.

Staffing Changes at JCPL

by:
Bethany

For more than a year now, JCPL staff have been engaged in envisioning a new future for the Library, one that touches every area of library service, from materials, to staffing, to facilities.

The full implementation of this new model of service will take some time as we work to balance our unlimited potential with limited resources. Consequently, we have focused initially on changes that don't require additional investment to accomplish.

For example, in the past few months, we've introduced a new way to staff the libraries and reach out into the community. We've moved many of our staff into new jobs, accountabilities, and/or locations and created robust training programs to help them meet the information demands of the 21st century. We believe this new way of doing business will surprise and delight you and greatly enhance our ability to provide exceptional service.

While much of this has gone on quietly, behind the scenes, some of you have noticed that a favorite staff member may have changed jobs or locations. Not to worry; we predict you'll soon find new favorites as we go forward.

We'll be implementing more pieces of our vision and sharing our accomplishments as they unfold. But for now, our staff is working diligently to make your library experiences better and better!

Do You Know When the Majority of a Child's Brain Development Happens?

by:
Bethany

Fact: More than 90 percent of brain development happens between the ages of birth and five.

Reading aloud to babies and toddlers promotes positive brain development and helps to build important pre-reading skills. That's why JCPL provides thousands of early-literacy storytimes every year. By doing so, we help our youngest residents get the best possible start in life. This year, the Library Foundation is raising money to support the following storytime opportunities:

  • Baby and Toddler storytimes
  • Traveling Children's Library
  • American Sign Language Storytimes
  • Start with a Story

This week has been Friends of the Library week and as always, our Friends group is working hard to support the mission of JCPL. Right now, they are busy with their annual Fall Whale of a Used Book Sale!

In the past year, our 700-member Friends group has helped JCPL by volunteering to work at the Belmar Gift & Book Shop, the Spring and Fall Whale of a Used Book Sales, and Holiday Sales. Last year, they provided more than 8,500 volunteer hours valued at $183,312.

We couldn't do all that we do without them and want to thank them for their dedication.
